Comparing real number expressions is an opportunity to introduce the idea of an "inequality" and  to emphasize the multiple representations that numbers have.  When covering this topic we are looking to use the idea of greater than or less than to order numbers.  Students have the most difficulty working with numbers that are not in the same form.  For example, comparing fractions and decimals or comparing inches and centimeters.  It is important, then, to help students understand that things can only be compared if they are in the same form.

Why?

Comparing fractions and decimals is an important concept because it helps with estimation.
